A Christmas enthusiast from Chelmsford, known for his spectacular festive light displays, has outdone himself this year with his most magnificent spectacle yet. This isn't just any display, though. Paul Bibby, 59, has dedicated this year's illuminations to his late partner, Lynda Cummings, who sadly passed away in October.
For 18 years, Paul's home has been a beacon of festive cheer, attracting locals and visitors alike. His elaborate light displays and his patriotic adornment of St George's flags during major international tournaments have made his home a local landmark. This year, however, the lights shine with a deeper meaning.
Using over 30,000 lights with 70,000 bulbs, and a host of inflatable festive figures, including a snowman and Santa Claus, Paul has created a glowing tribute on King's Road to his partner, who unexpectedly passed away from heart problems.
Despite the significant cost and the £300+ electricity bill, Paul remains undeterred. He told EssexLive, "It's only for a month. Some people would say there's the cost of living crisis but I like to do it and bring joy to as many people as I can."
Paul's dedication extends beyond the lights. Every morning and night, he and his son, Aaron Bibby, 37, inflate and deflate the festive props, a process that takes 45 minutes. Visitors from all over the UK flock to see his display, which also supports the Essex Air Ambulance through donations.
This year, a sign reading 'My lights are dedicated to Lynda' adds a poignant touch to the display. Paul shared, "Lynda was a big fan of the lights - and before she got ill she'd fill our house with decorations. So for Linda, my lights this year are the best ever."
While Paul contemplates whether this year might be his last, he is determined to make it his best. His story is a touching reminder of the power of love, community, and the spirit of Christmas.
