The UK's first-ever Burns Bus is set to transform the way burns patients receive care, making healthcare more accessible and reducing travel burdens. This innovative mobile dressing clinic will bring the expertise of the St Andrew’s Burns Centre in Chelmsford directly to patients, eliminating long and challenging journeys.
Affectionately known as ‘BOB’ (Burns Outreach Bus), this fully equipped mobile clinic is about the size of an ambulance and features reclining couches, dressing trolleys, and storage cupboards. Staffed by specialist burns nurses and therapists, BOB will provide vital wound care closer to home for both children and adults.
David Barnes, Clinical Lead for Burns, highlights the significant impact: “Our patients often travel up to 240 miles for appointments. The Burns Bus will ease this burden, providing care closer to home and reducing costs and travel time.”
This groundbreaking service, the first of its kind in the country, is set to serve as a model for other burns centres across the UK. By making burns care more accessible, the Burns Bus aims to reduce health inequalities and improve the quality of life for patients.
The mobile clinic will be stationed at large Tesco supermarket car parks in London, Ipswich, and Ely, with pre-arranged appointments for patients. The £50,000 funding for this one-year pilot was made possible through the London and South East Burns Network and a generous donation from the Doris Macer Foundation.
The Burns Bus promises to be a groundbreaking solution, combining convenience and specialised care. Additionally, it will be used for burns prevention events, further contributing to the well-being of local communities.
