In a heartwarming display of familial solidarity, Chelmsford's own Alison and Josh Pegrum are gearing up for a thrilling tandem bicycle ride in the upcoming Cycle for Life event. This popular sponsored bike ride is an annual fundraising endeavour organised by Farleigh Hospice, a charity providing free support and care to those affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex.
Cycle for Life is not just about raising funds; it's a family-friendly event that encourages community participation, with children cycling for free. The event, scheduled for Sunday, September 8, offers three scenic routes through the stunning Essex countryside, with distances of 20, 50, or 100 kilometres, starting and finishing at Farleigh's hospice building in Broomfield, Chelmsford.
Whether you're a beginner cyclist or a seasoned professional, there's a route for you. The 20km distance is perfect for families and beginners, while the 50km route offers a relaxed ride through the eight Essex Rodings. For the more experienced cyclists, the 100km course is a challenging ride through picturesque villages and part of the 2014 Tour de France route.
Alison, a Practice Educator in Farleigh’s Education Team, will be at the start line of the 100km route with her sons, Josh (21) and Tom (23), and a friend. Alison and Josh will be sharing a tandem bicycle, a family tradition that started before the boys were born.
Alison shared, "When I asked Josh if he would join me on Cycle for Life, he agreed to cycle 100km on the proviso he would be at the front as ‘captain’ this time as he is the strongest rider - so I’m the stoker at the back now."
The Pegrum family's participation in Cycle for Life is more than just a fun event; it's a fantastic way to support Farleigh Hospice and their invaluable work. Farleigh Hospice extends its gratitude to all participants and sponsors of Cycle for Life.
If you're inspired to join, the registration costs are £20 for the 20km ride and £30 for the 50km and 100km rides if you book online by 4pm on September 5. On the day prices are £30 to cycle 20km and £40 to cycle 50km or 100km. Remember, under 18s cycle for free but do need to register, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
