In the heart of Chelmsford, a new culinary star has risen, captivating the nation with his exceptional cooking skills. Brin Pirathapan, a 29-year-old veterinary surgeon, has triumphed in the 20th series of MasterChef, impressing judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode with his inventive and flavourful dishes. Growing up in Chelmsford and now residing in Bristol, Brin’s journey from vet to MasterChef champion is nothing short of extraordinary.
Brin’s winning menu showcased his diverse background and culinary creativity. His starter featured a stunning combination of fried capers, pickled chilli, pickled and charred shallots, and an orange and honey-glazed octopus, accompanied by tempura mussels, herb-baked tuiles, and a romesco tomato-based sauce. This dish set the stage for what Judge John Torode described as “the best final we’ve ever done” in the show’s two-decade history.
Guided by Michel Roux Jr, Brin’s main course continued to impress with spiced venison loin, beef short-rib, and a pickled mushroom tartlet. The dish was elevated with celeriac and soybean paste miso puree, salt-baked beetroot, pak choi, and a red wine sauce split with herb oil. His dessert was a masterpiece of white chocolate and cardamom and saffron cremeux, pistachio meringue shards, whisky-poached mango, raspberry gel, and a mango, lime, and chilli sorbet.
Brin attributes his culinary flair to his Tamil Sri Lankan heritage and British upbringing, blending bold flavours with refined European techniques. “I have a passion for creating dishes with bold flavours but refining them to high standards with European techniques,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Brin dreams of a future in the food industry, exploring opportunities like writing a cookbook, hosting supper clubs, or private dining. “Waking up every morning knowing that I’m doing something I absolutely love would be a great feeling,” he said.
As Chelmsford celebrates Brin’s remarkable achievement, the community eagerly anticipates the exciting culinary adventures that lie ahead for this talented local chef.
