Tucked away in the beautiful Essex countryside, just a ten-minute drive from Chelmsford city centre, lies the charming village of Galleywood. This commuter haven is steeped in history, brimming with natural beauty, and offers a delightful array of pubs and leisure activities.
One of Galleywood's most intriguing historical landmarks is the Galleywood Racecourse. Dating back to the 17th century, this right-handed loop was the only racecourse in the country to run around a church. It was a highlight of the entertainment calendar in the late 18th and early 19th century, with Chelmsford dominating the racing scene.
The racecourse received the Royal seal of approval in 1770 when King George III offered 100 guineas as prize money for the 'Queen's Plate'. The race was named in honour of Queen Charlotte, as Essex was the first place she set foot on English soil. The course ran its last horse race in April 1935, and was purchased by the Chelmsford Rural District Council in 1942. Today, remnants of the racecourse, including the white posts and rails, have been preserved as a nod to the village's rich equestrian history.
Galleywood is also home to Chelmer Park, one of Chelmsford's main parks. This green oasis offers a plethora of sporting facilities, including hockey, football, cricket, and netball. It has nurtured top sportsmen and women, hosted international hockey matches, and received the nationally acclaimed Green Flag Award for its excellence.
When not hosting sporting events, Chelmer Park is a haven for leisurely strolls, family days out, and wildlife spotting. The park also boasts remnants of an old apple orchard, further enhancing its natural charm.
In recent years, Galleywood has embraced the burgeoning British wine industry. The Galleywood Estate Vineyard, which began with trial vines in 2009, has expanded to three vineyards across 20 acres of land. The vineyards are home to several varieties, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunoier, Chardonnay, and Bacchus. Each vineyard boasts its own soil characteristics and microclimate, allowing for the cultivation of a diverse range of grapes.
So, whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, a sports enthusiast, or a wine connoisseur, Galleywood, Chelmsford has something for everyone. Why not take a turn off the A12 and discover this delightful village for yourself?
