In the heart of Chelmsford lies a quaint culinary gem that has stood the test of time. Stewart's Deli and Tearoom, tucked away on Tindal Street adjacent to the bustling High Chelmer Shopping Centre, proudly holds the title of the oldest tearoom in the city. This charming establishment has become synonymous with delectable sandwiches that some might say border on perfection.
Upon entering Stewart's, one is greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The décor is a blend of simplicity and elegance, with soft-hued walls, wooden furnishings, and chalkboards that announce the day's gastronomic delights. Despite its modest size, the tearoom's menu is anything but, offering a wide array of choices from hearty brunches and full English breakfasts to afternoon teas and a variety of sandwiches.
During a recent visit of Ellis Whitehouse, the tearoom's small space, with just a few tables, was quiet, save for another patron enjoying a full English breakfast. Opting for a lighter option, the choice of a salted beef baguette with pickles and mustard was made, accompanied by a side salad and coleslaw, and a strong flat white coffee.
The baguette itself was a highlight, served warm with a crispy crust and tender beef, complemented by the tanginess of the pickles and a hint of heat from the mustard. The balance of flavours and textures made for a satisfying meal, with the coleslaw adding a creamy touch to the plate.
The experience at Stewart's is not only about the food. The solitary staff member on duty engaged in friendly banter, reminiscing about the simple pleasure of reading a newspaper in a café—a tradition that Stewart's upholds amidst our digital age.
Unable to resist the allure of the cake display, a takeaway slice of orange-flavoured cake with seeds was the chosen epilogue to the meal. Though slightly on the dry side, the cake's creamy flavour was a delightful endnote.
