In Essex, a retired police dog named Baloo is proving that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. This eight-year-old Belgian Malinois, once a dedicated member of Essex Police, has become a source of happiness for Braintree Care Home residents and local officers. After a courageous career cut short by an injury in 2018, Baloo underwent surgery and now thrives on three legs. Her indomitable spirit has earned her a finalist spot for The Kennel Club’s Hero Dog 2025 award, with the winner to be revealed at the upcoming Crufts dog show.
Baloo, alongside her handler Mandy, recently visited Braintree Care Home, accompanied by PCSO Keating and PCSO Johnson. The visit was filled with laughter and joy, with Baloo even attempting to sneak a cake! Her presence offered emotional support, reducing stress and bringing smiles to everyone she met. The visit also included a stop at Braintree Police Station, where Baloo’s cuddles lifted the spirits of the officers.
Essex Police have emphasised the significance of these visits, which foster positive community interactions and build trust. Baloo and Mandy’s dedication to wellbeing work has garnered them a nomination for the esteemed Hero Dog Award.
