Essex's Young Stars: Sports Inspiring Positive Change

In the heart of Essex, a unique initiative is turning the tide for young individuals who were once treading the path of crime. Thanks to the Active Essex Foundation (AEF), these youngsters are now embracing healthier, more positive lifestyles, all through the power of sport and physical activity.

The AEF's Sport and Youth Crime Prevention Programme is a beacon of hope for those aged between 10 and 24 who are vulnerable, involved in criminality, or victims of exploitation. The programme offers these young individuals the chance to participate in sports sessions, coupled with the comprehensive care of mentoring and life skills coaching.

The success of this initiative is best illustrated through the stories of four young people who have managed to redirect their lives, thanks to the project.

Take the example of a 17-year-old from Colchester, who, after a history of criminality, was introduced to Muay Thai classes through the AEF Sports and Life Skills team. Today, he volunteers three days per week, runs boxing sessions, and is working towards a personal training qualification. His relationship with his family has improved, and he is positively engaged with the community.

Then, there's a 17-year-old from Thurrock, who was out of employment, education, or training and had a Detention and Training Order. The project introduced him to rugby, and he is now regularly training, aiming to compete in matches, and has joined a gym to support his fitness.

Similarly, a 15-year-old from Basildon, despite complex family issues and involvement in exploitation, found solace in football and boxing sessions. The project's team supported him through social care meetings and liaised with the police, ensuring his safety.

Lastly, a 13-year-old girl from Basildon, who had been in trouble with the police for fighting, was introduced to horse-riding lessons. This incentive was enough to keep her out of trouble, and she now volunteers at holiday clubs.

These are just four of the 754 young people who registered for the Sport and Life Skills programmes in 2023-2024, a remarkable increase of 114% from the previous year.

Suzanne Page, the project manager, believes that the structured programme provides young people with positive activities in safe spaces, guided by trusted adults. This initiative has helped many return to school or college, attend training courses, or find employment.

The project has not only reduced antisocial behaviour and youth criminality but has also given young people a new focus, inspiring them to reach their full potential. The AEF Sport and Life Skills programme is indeed a testament to the transformative power of sports and a guiding hand.
