Perrywood Garden Centre: Celebrating 70 Blooming Years

As the autumn leaves fall, Perrywood Garden Centre in Tiptree, Essex, is preparing to celebrate a milestone anniversary. Founded in 1955 by Mary and Les Bourne, this family-run business is turning 70 in November. From humble beginnings with four acres of land growing potatoes and strawberries, Perrywood Garden Centre has blossomed into an award-winning business with a second centre in Sudbury and a third, Perrywood Buckhatch, launching near Chelmsford in February.

The Bourne family remains at the heart of the business. Mary and Les's son, Alan, is the director and plant buyer, while his wife Karin, though retired, still has a hand in the business. Their children, Simon, Tristan and Hannah, help run the garden centre. Hannah Powell, the communications and HR director, attributes their success to continuous growth, reinvestment in the business, and a clear vision.

The 70th-anniversary celebrations are already underway with a "community planting campaign". Perrywood Garden Centre is supporting 70 gardening projects for schools, charities, and community groups by donating £10,000 worth of plants and gardening equipment. The deadline for applications is February 9.

Despite the festivities, the Bournes are not resting on their laurels. They are currently building a new garden centre at Perrywood Sudbury, due to open in October. Mrs Powell believes the secret to their success lies in their shared vision, strong team, and passion for plants.
