Revival of Unique Nordic Walking Group

The quaint village of Writtle is buzzing with excitement as the pioneering Nordic Walking group makes a triumphant return. This unique sport group, led by instructor Anne Mills, is not just a walking club, but a community that brings together locals of all ages, from 7 to 93, in a fun and engaging way.

Nordic Walking, a sport that involves walking with poles, is a fantastic exercise for those who may not consider themselves particularly sporty. It's a gentle way to reduce stress on joints, improve posture, and enhance muscle strength, all while enjoying the beautiful outdoors of Essex.

Anne Mills, the group's enthusiastic instructor, takes immense pride in her role. "Seeing people's progression and them actually enjoying something and just embracing it is one of the most rewarding things you can do," she says. Her passion for the sport and her students is evident in every session she leads.

The group, which initially launched at Anglia Ruskin University's Writtle campus, near Chelmsford, has seen participants from all walks of life. From first-time Nordic walker Karen Brimson, 63, who relished the chance to exercise with a new group of people, to Rod Dodman, 75, who joined the group after losing his beloved dog, each member has a unique story to tell.

And it's not just the newcomers who are enjoying the experience. Lynda Smith, 71, a previous participant, was delighted to rejoin the group for the new season. The Nordic Walking group offers weekly walks in various picturesque locations across Essex including Langdon Hills, Danbury, and Leigh-on-Sea.

Rain or shine, the Nordic Walking group is committed to promoting fitness, fun, and community spirit throughout the year. So, why not join them? As Anne Mills says, "It's such a good sport," and who knows, you might just find your new favourite pastime.
