When it comes to having a stress free moving day, you need to put the preparation in. This means the work and toil involved with creating a stress free moving day begins long before you get to moving day.
When you are packing your items to take with you, you need to review what you actually need to take. There is a need to declutter when you move home and if there are things you don’t need in your new home, don’t bring them with you. You can sell items, give them away, pass them to charity but if you don’t need them, don’t bring them.
There is also the fact that you should clearly label every box or storage container that is going to your new home. If you are very organised, you should give each room in your new home a name, a number, a colour or some form of identifier and then when you start to pack all of your belongings, pack them with respect to the home they will be placed in when you move.
Have a moving day bag or box set aside. There will be things that you need on moving day and if they are already packed away, you will be far from your best and perhaps flustered or out of step with your normal routine. Things like toothbrush and toothpaste, towels, soap, a kettle, mugs, some coffee or tea and other important things like contact lenses, glasses or medication all have to be present when you move because they make life easier or more bearable. You should also have bottles or flasks of water handy to ensure everyone can stay hydrated during the moving process.
rrrThis may be a modern tip but you will want to ensure that your smartphone and tablets are fully charged. It may be that you need to contact people or look up information so make sure that you have your phone and charger handy on the big day.
rrrInform your neighbours that you are moving out. If you provide people with advance warning that you are likely to be moving furniture out of a property all day, they will be more likely to provide you with space to move all of these belongings in an easier and more convenient manner.
rrrHave tools handy. You may need to make a quick repair before you move out or you may need to fix something when you move in to your new house. Having a set of tools and some equipment will allow you to get to work when you need to.
rrrHave a camera ready. Your smartphone may be suitable here but it helps to take pictures of your old home when you leave and pictures of your new home when you move in. This will provide you with evidence relating to the condition of both of these properties, which may be of benefit if an issue arises at a later date.
rrrIf you have children or pets, make sure that someone can watch them or that they can be entertained and amused during the moving process. Moving day isn’t much fun for youngsters or pets and this may impact on your own ability to work so if you keep your kids and/or pets happy, your own processes will be a lot simpler.
rrrIt never hurts to have spare packing material handy because you never know what you may have forgotten or overlooked during the packing process.
rrrKnow the route to the new property, inform other people and if you can, send someone along early to find good parking spaces. It may be worth putting a sign up (if you are moving to a flat) saying that you are moving in and that you would appreciate having access to parking or space close to the property.
rrrIf you take the time to plan ahead and set things up to ensure the moving process is simpler, you should find that moving day doesn’t have to be as stressful as it could be.
